I was always under the impression that, when it comes to a reliable transport system, South Africa can complete with most. We have Metro Rail and, contrary to popular belief, it is actually pretty safe. Then, of course, we have our bus services Compared to other bus services all over the world, SA bus services aren’t as dependable but they are certainly dependable enough.
So, it’s alarming when you read stories of crimes committed against bus drivers and passengers. For instance, yesterday morning a bus was hijacked close to Benoni. When the bus driver tried to save his passengers, he was shot. Fortunately, he’s in a stable condition.
Obviously, this could have been
prevented if the driver was armed or if any of his
passengers were.
Many South African women rely on the bus service. In fact, for some of them, it’s the only mode of transport they have. To read stories like this must be very problematic for them.
There is a solution albeit a radical one. Women should invest in firearms. Yes, I know that is a radical idea but, think about it. A firearm is simply a tool you use for saving your life and, I can guarantee you, any thief who’s dumb enough (and most of them are pretty dumb) to hijack a bus filled with women armed to the teeth will get his comeuppance quite soon.
If he gets off the bus let’s hope he has the insight to warn his buddy’s. Yes, guns is a radical idea but the conventional doesn’t seem to be working. Maybe it’s time to go with the radical.
